Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The abuse of illicit drugs has long been linked to various forms of criminal behavior, including youth violence, particularly in urban centers across Nigeria. In Minna LGA, Niger State, the growing problem of drug abuse among young people has become a critical issue for law enforcement and community leaders. A study by Suleiman and Ibraheem (2024) highlighted that the widespread use of substances like cannabis, codeine, and tramadol among youths has been a major catalyst for violence, including gang wars, armed robbery, and violent protests. These drugs, when abused, alter the psychological and emotional state of young people, making them prone to aggression, impaired decision-making, and reckless behavior. This pattern of youth violence has disrupted the peace and stability of Minna LGA and has posed a significant challenge to local security forces. Drug abuse, when combined with social, economic, and political factors, contributes to an escalation in violent acts within the community. This study aims to explore the link between drug abuse and youth violence in Minna, examining the underlying causes and proposing solutions to mitigate the issue.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Minna, the surge in youth violence is closely associated with the increasing rates of drug abuse among the younger population. Many youths, particularly those in impoverished communities, have turned to drugs as a means of escape from economic hardships, social instability, or peer pressure. This has led to a rise in criminal activities such as drug-related violence, robberies, and even deaths. Despite various government efforts to address the issue, the situation remains critical. This study seeks to investigate how drug abuse contributes to youth violence in Minna, highlighting the specific challenges faced by the local community.
